Relationship Counselling and Psychotherapy

Relationships are central to our lives and well-being. When our relationships don’t meet our expectations, they can be the biggest source of stress and pain, which can affect our self-esteem, overall health, and feelings about ourselves and our lives.

Couples may experience communication difficulties or problems at different times in their relationships, such as starting to live together, having the first baby, losing employment, bereavement, children leaving home, sexual difficulties, infidelity, divorce, and separation. The thinking space of therapy can help couples communicate better and understand each other better.

Therapy with me can offer you the space to think and talk without judgment. We can think together about why things might be difficult for you so you can gain a deeper understanding of yourself and your relationships.

Meet Sarah

I am a psychodynamic couple and individual psychotherapist and have experience of providing therapy to couples and individuals from many different backgrounds and at many different life stages.

I completed my post-graduate psychotherapy training at Tavistock Relationships, an internationally renowned institution for couple psychotherapy, training and research. I am an Honorary Fellow at Birkbeck College, University of London.

In addition to working in private practice, I am a visiting clinician and assessor at Tavistock Relationships, where I work with individuals and couples. In addition to my clinical role at Tavistock Relationships, I have worked with parents and families for many years, supporting them with parenting issues and leading research programmes and evidence-based interventions.

I am registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP) and adhere to their professional code and ethical guidelines.

I am dedicated to providing a safe and accepting space so you can think and be honest without judgment or fear.

I look forward to meeting you and working with you to help you better understand yourself and those who are most important to you.

Couples

Relationships start out full of hope and expectation but can end up disappointing and being a source of dissatisfaction, resentment, and loneliness. Things can go wrong, and hurtful things can be said or done. The focus can often be on the other person and them being the source of the problem.

However, a couple is created together; both people have a part to play in what happens in a relationship. Couple therapy can help you explore how things are between you; it is a safe and non-judgmental space to think about how things might be different.

Therapy can improve a relationship by improving intimacy and communication. If you feel like your relationship has no future, therapy can help you work together on ending it.

Individuals

You may feel stuck and unsure of what's next. The thinking space that therapy offers can help you better understand yourself and others. It can help you think about who you are and understand something about the way you think and behave.

Your current relationship might not be what you had imagined it would be. You might find yourself arguing with your partner, and things don't get resolved. You might be single, and finding the right person might feel impossible. Perhaps commitment is difficult. It may be that a long-term relationship has ended, and you are struggling to imagine what comes next.

You might also be navigating the painful and often isolating experience of family estrangement, whether you've made the difficult decision to distance yourself from family members, or find yourself cut off by others. These ruptures can bring grief, guilt, confusion and a deep sense of loss, even when the separation feels necessary.

If you have difficulties in relationships, therapy with me can help you understand yourself better.

Psychosexual Therapy

This specialist area of psychotherapy addresses concerns around sexual function, desire, intimacy, identity and relationships. Whether difficulties have been present throughout life or have emerged following particular circumstances, therapy can offer valuable support. Sessions provide space to explore what might be contributing to sexual concerns, work through any anxiety or shame connected to sex, and develop greater bodily awareness, confidence and overall sexual wellbeing.

As I'm currently completing further training in psychosexual therapy, I offer these sessions at a reduced fee.
